The Secret Ingredient (It’s Who’s in the Kitchen)

We spend a lot of time talking about oven temperatures and kneading techniques, but any master baker will tell you the truth: A bake is only as good as its ingredients.

You can’t make a world-class croissant with cheap, waxy margarine. You can’t get a complex sourdough tang from a packet of expired yeast. To get a premium result, you need premium inputs.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how this applies to our lives. If we want to reach our highest goals, we have to be just as selective about the people we "mix" with as we are about the chocolate we melt into our ganache.

1. Avoid the "Fillers"

In the food industry, "fillers" are cheap additives used to bulk up a product without adding any real nutritional value. In life, fillers are people who take up space and time but don't contribute to your growth or support your vision. They aren't necessarily "bad," but they don't help the dough rise.

The Lesson: Look for "whole food" friendships—people who are authentic, substantive, and add real value to your life.

2. Check the "Grade" of Your Circle

There is a reason we look for Grade A eggs or high-protein bread flour. These ingredients are designed for high performance.

  • Are the people around you at the "grade" you want to be?

  • Do they have the character, integrity, and ambition that mirrors your own?

When you surround yourself with people who are already where you want to go, their "quality" rubs off on you. You begin to rise to their level.

3. The Chemistry of Environment

Baking is chemistry. If you add too much salt, you kill the yeast. If the water is too hot, the dough won't rise.

The people we surround ourselves with change our internal chemistry. If you are surrounded by critics, your creativity wilts. If you are surrounded by "yeast-like" people—those who encourage, lift, and expand—you’ll find yourself growing effortlessly.

The Takeaway

Don't be afraid to audit your "pantry." It’s okay to be picky about who gets a seat at your table and who gets a say in your process. You are crafting a life that is meant to be extraordinary, and that requires the highest quality ingredients—both in the mixing bowl and in your circle of friends.
